As primitive man acquired greater dexterity with his hands, he was able to perform more complex tasks, thus creating the need for the table. These first tables were extremely rudimentary, often consisting of little more than a simple board supported on the knees of the user, who was still accustomed to carrying out his activities seated on the ground. Only half a century ago, in traditional Japan, the table, as other items of furniture, were adapted to the characteristic crouching position.
From the 14th and 15th centuries onward, the table was assigned a variety of functions which, in turn, led to the creation of specific shapes. In addition to the dining table, other shapes were created which were better adapted to sedentary work, such as the desk, or other models like the console table (or wall table) whose function was mainly ornamental, the center table and the multipurpose table.
A table comprises two basic elements: the surface and the supporting structure. While the latter may consist of any number of pieces which can have a wide variety of shapes, the top has a more restricted form, being square, rectangular, circular or ovular. They can, however, be made of a variety of materials, such as wood or marble, to give two classic examples or glass, reinforced plastic and formica as modern alternatives.
